Since 1979

Four decades.
Same family.
Same kitchen.

Hornið opened in 1979 — the first Italian restaurant in Iceland. The same family has owned it ever since. Today, the children and grandchildren of the founders work here alongside their parents.

The building is old. The recipes are older. The hospitality is the same as it’s always been.

Our story

The story of Hornið

From the first Italian restaurant in Iceland to a Reykjavík institution spanning three generations.

Iceland’s first

When Hornið opened in 1979, there was no Italian restaurant in Iceland. The owners built something entirely new: a place that brought the warmth and simplicity of Italian cooking to a cold northern city, using the best local ingredients they could find, and treating every guest like they were coming home.

That founding idea has never changed. The menu has grown. The city around us has transformed. But the kitchen still runs on the same principles it did on the first day.

Same family. Three generations.

The family who opened Hornið in 1979 still owns it today. Their children work here. So do their grandchildren. In an industry where restaurants change hands every few years, that continuity is rare — and it shows in everything from the consistency of the food to the way the staff remember your name on your third visit.

This is not a chain. It is a family business, run with the kind of care that only comes from people who built something themselves and intend to keep it.

Fresh ingredients. Nothing complicated.

Italian cooking at its best is not complicated. It is about the quality of what goes into the dish and the skill of not over-thinking it. The pizzas are made to order. The pasta is made with care. The fish of the day changes with whatever is best at the market that morning.

We make good coffee. That matters.

Hornid food

“An old house near the harbour. Thick walls, original beams, windows that look out onto the street. The kind of place where a business dinner and a birthday celebration can happen at adjacent tables without either feeling out of place.”
